I think knowledge and intelligence are different (but admittedly overlapping) things. I know a lot of frighteningly clever people who have dreadful general knowledge (EastEnders and the Premiership don't come up in (many) Oxbridge exam answers).

Agreed. My brother is a lawyer on a 6 figure sum, and his general knowledge is non-existant. When playing with him he thought the capital of spain was barcelona etc etc etc.

(I would like to point out however that whilst I did get pissed and thoroughly enjoy uni, the job I do now is closely related to my degree. I would love to go back though and do a postgrad in something like swimming, just so I could experience the joys of an 8 hour week again!)

Actually most grads from places like caley & paisley are still being subsidised because they've not got a hope in hell of ever earning enough to pay back what they borrowed

Scottish students only get their fees back I believe. Unfair but thats the way it is.

I studied first year maths at Glasgow along with Accounting. The tiny wee speccy guy who is the head of maths is a genius.

Even in England the taxpayer subsidizes tution fees. £3000 a year ain't going to cover costs.

Is that the guy who still wears his cloak to lectures (and always covered in chalk) ? His name was Whitelaw or something like that. He was a good guy - unless you didn't like maths.

Thomas Whitelaw - Legend.

I didnt have enough credits to graduate in accountancy alone so took first year maths to get the credits. Monday - Friday 9-10 am. Missed about 75% of the lectures.

Went to see him and he gave me all the course notes, no questions asked.

Seriously the man is a genius.
