Word up profitability

Post by dangerous »

Apologies for starting another word up thread. Just wondering if anyone plays this game with the sole intention of winning money rather than getting high scores.

I cant get scores above 1900 (my best is 1840) so if the pound is on 1400 ish and i clear the grid for say 1800 points the best I can hope for 2 or 3 pounds. But if I intentionally lose a couple and force the target down to around 1250 then clearing the grid gets me 6, 8 or even 10 pounds.

Is this the way to go then for a steady profit? Since the new dictionary came in I can actually clear the grid regularly yet the high score tables near me suggest people are struggling with it compared to the old one.

i think the new wordlist has alienated a lot of previous players who, rather than treating new and unlikely words as sops, think "bugger me i didn't know that was a word*, maybe i should stick to Q&A games because i'm not a word genius"

in answer to your other question, i know better ways to make money than swp. i personally play the game for the words not scores or money and i'm boycotting itboxes at the moment so only playing on the old version with more static winplans. but if you are holding out for a decent prize, i wouldn't collect a clearance on any less** than 1250 for a good chance of JP within the prize structure.

also 1840 is a very good effort, that puts you comfortably in the top 50 solo players in the country***

*imo they are not
** yes, yes: fewer
*** notwithstanding team VB's ringers. miaow.
nobody ever wins on those things.

i don't really play them for profit. but it is nice to make the odd bob or two.

even if a game is really fun to play i wouldnt put much money in it if there was no chance of winning

Doing it your way you can get a bit of both. If the money is too high, might as well try and build a big word and then maybe the clearance, since a bog standard clearance won't do. But if the money drops low enough then hacking out a few quid pays for the fun games.

In terms of playing JUST for money, the natural thing to do is to move around different pubs of course.
