to manage the code. to make sure it isn't dodgy, to make sure it is of a certain standard, to make sure the programming is done on time and the staff aren't taking the piss out of the person paying for it.
yes, those £60k a year 'programmer jobs' exist, but you are part programmer, part project manager, part qa, part operations manager, part service delivery manager and you are responsible for making sure your development team are 'motivated'.

not a dig or ploy to put you off becoming a developer, but as someone who has a few years in the IT industry i'm giving you a reality check

If your any good at high level IT then forget programming gaming machines, the money is in contracting where the supply and demand set the daily rates.

60k a year is peanuts compared to those on 800-1200 a day.

I'd love to be a mathematical modeller for games, some of the stuff for example Ash gaming and IGT produce must take fucking ages to work out!

those 50-70k 'developers' jobs do exist, but if you think they are paying for your coding skills you are incorrect.
We're clearly in different industries of programming. I couldn't get a job for a major corp for love or money in web dev as they expect you to have a proper engineering degree. They sure as hell won't take on staff for cheap. May be very different for your line of work though

advertised rates, tend to not be direct contract, of course agnecies will be chancing their arm offering lower rates, but they are a foot in the door... I wouldn't belive it myself but theres guys contracting for a well known large insurnace company in norwich that are charging near four figures a day, i've seen the invoices.

Specialist knowlegde commands loads of money when in demand, suppose it does reckon that there very few peopl that actually know what they are doing.

When RBS systems fecked up it was heard that the guys who knew how the system worked said their price and it got rejected.

Biggest one that amazed me recently though is a guy that specialises in IT for recording and sound studios, charges five figures for call out to fix issues.

Sort of in level with high level legal costs, £1000 a hour work is out there.
