Why do so many pubs shoot themselves in the foot. In the current climate pubs need to conduct themselves in a positive manner and attract a broad spectrum of people and not just a regulars club that cast a suspicious eye on ayone who walks in they don't regconise. The thing is, it's not just the regulars, the landords and managers are as guilty as anyone.

I often get the feeling that I'm being mistaken for a police officer or tax man and the pub has obviously got things to hide. But when will they get the message, your pub is going to go bust if you continue like this so change your image at once.

Top Tips for these types of pubs.

1. Some sort of refurbishment to make it a more welcoming place (no net or closed curtains etc) Dosen't have to be expensive, but just use common sense.

2. Make your pub attractive to the general public and not just your lay-about regulars who need to find a job.

3. Make sure you have the heating on and hot water running out the taps.

4. If you can, try to open up the front of your pub so people can see in, ie big open windows or inviting entrance. This will attract people who would have otherwise never have considered entering the pub.

5. Don't bar fruit players, you'll make good money off them over the year with no cost to yourself.

Come on pubs, give yourself a boot up the backside before you go out of business, it's not rocket science.

You are not seriously suggesting people who visit a pub soley to shark the machines, buy maybe one drink and most times leave with a lot more money than they arrived with are somehow an asset to the pub?

unless it is a chain struggling pubs cant afford to refurbish vicious circle means they slowly die

Why do pub lanlords take an interest on what goes in & what comes out of their fruitmachine.

Is it because they get 50% of the fruitmachine profits.

I once got acused of winning the lanlords holiday money & i got barred for that reason.

I once had a £25 emptier on the fruit money laundry & the lanlord said that i was barred for taking alot of coins at the fruit machine,
He said 'did you know that taking money out of this machine is money laundry'
I pointed to him that the fruit machine is called money laundry, he laughed and he let me stay an empty it. :P

this is an interesting point. I have actually done a survey with a pub manager whereby I was asked to leave the fruit for a week to see if takings changed - they went down.

Players can be good for machine revenue. Casual players will lose their money quicker hence leaving the machine free for others to lose on/for them to lose more.

With the drinks money on top, I'd say it was a winner!

What amazes me “John" is when you're winning they take a huge interest and get pissy. Yet as soon as there is a problem with it or an IOU suddenly “it's not our machine there in here from a separate company" ARSEHOLES AREN'T THEY?

Having strangers who only buy one drink and remove money from the economy of the pub that may otherwise been spent in the pub. And thereby making their regulars lose even quicker so they have less money to spend is better for the pub? LOL.

So every landlord should encourage these pro players then? LOLOL

Some of the less sucessful online poker networks have now started banning big winners for similar reasons. The mantra of online poker was always they don't care who wins because they always get the same rake.

But for networks/sites with lower liquidity big winners taking large amounts of money out of the network that will then never be recycled is damaging. So the damage these type of players do to the network starts to outweigh the rake they pay.

Exactly. I've only potted a couple of £70s in my limited play of the fruities.

Both times it was back to the bar to buy some sambucas for the mates I was with. I'm happy and the pubs happy with me.

Contrast that with the pro approach of potting it then shooting off with the winnings. The regulars have less change to buy drinks with as they lose on the fruity. You haven't liquified your assets at the bar, so overall the landlord gets less through the till. (And he gets an earful from his regulars about why he lets the pro player do this on a weekly basis), making the machine expensive and short lived for the next few casual players.

NB Obviously when there are a group of us are out and we are annihilating a quizzer so half the games are practically unplayable for the next month, it's a completely different scenario. ops:

Players are good, say the pub has a cluedo witch has never been ripped. its always ready boards are cheep and the locals can just hi lo untill a shit number comes along then collect maybe playing the machine for half an hour on £1 stake on losing £10 £15. player comes in makes 60 on it, its then 130ish to get back to ready state. if i was a lanlord id have decent fruits, and would never ban players.

exactly what i was saying, so true. Pie factory was a nightmare for this, almost impossible for a casual to lose fast on a non dead one.

Went down my "lucky" pub today! Made £35 on the electro and spent £25 on 2 meals for me and the wife! Landlord gets the money in his till instead of a crap % from the games company! Everyone happy!
