Describe your local arcades!

Post by Mr Move It »

You don't have to say where they are - I just thought it would be interesting. What's the clientèle? Playables? Awful machines? What the punters and staff are like?

For me, I've got 2 Silvers and an independent one.

The Silvers between them got a Let's Play DOND which I believe is the rare one. Its condition is mint though, looks brand new and £70 version. There's also a £5 Panther, not the Ziggy clone but instead of a Clone of Walk of Wealth. Consistently plays decent for me. There's a crusty old Quick On The Draw, paint flaking off, been there for the whole 9 years that I've been going. It's the only Vivid that I have access to now. Silvers also got Star Wars V Empire Strikes Back, I can safely say that I make a profit on that every time. There's Empire's Cock-A-Doodle-Dough originally on £25 and played decent, then they re-glassed it to £5 and it became awful. One odd thing about it though, having 2 Silvers here is that the machine has been in both of the branches. Same machine, just moved from one Silvers to the other. It's also got Road To Riches (awful). Clientèle - not many people. If any, mainly middle-aged / elderly who play the lo-techs. When I went earlier this week, I was offered a £3 for £3 which I accepted and they get me to sign an A4 clip pad. In the whole day, there were only 4 names on it and I was the only one in there when I went, so Silvers are not getting much custom sadly. It was busier a few years back when they had a lot more AWPs.

The independent arcade has 3 DONDs (Walk of Wealth, Power 5, Dream Factory), a Bobby Dazzler and the Rainbow Riches clone of Road To Riches. Dream Factory is alright, seems to be a distant cousin of the 2001 Royale Banker with the slidey-extendy-board mechanism. The other day, it gave me the barcode and it trapped me in the top half of the board. I didn't know it did that. Like with Silvers, it also has Road To Riches, equally as bad. The Rainbow Riches version seems to board often but there is a blatant £8 block on it. It's also got one of those 10p pushers, but it's in an red AWP cabinet and it has a video game of DOND. How does that work? Clientèle - very busy, usually at least half a dozen whenever I'm there. Rainbow Bingo scheduled every hour, and ages are across the board. Again most people play lo-techs but they'll usually be one other on the AWPs with me.

P.S. Silvers are not to be confused with Quicksilver. They used to be called Shipley's.

2 near me an independant - staff are pretty awesome to me, let me rip/empty stuff they've had in there in the past - not a lot playable set of gg's. rest is all low tech or 20 odd year old shite

next is a cashino pretty dire couple old favs a darts 25 and a 15 robin hood, set of monops 5ers that get an awlful lot of play pinched a few good raises on them - staff are twats

both always have more staff than customers, the independant used to be 90% across the board but they've quietly turned them all down to between 70 and 80%

rarely bother with then now unless i'm in my home town bored and wanna kill a couple of hours

Seedy dives is the best way to describe them. Suspicious staff who begrudge changing notes for coins, or indeed on the rare occasion something has been played since you played it last and you get a slight raise, begrudge changing coins back for the very notes you parted with in the first place.

Rancid stale odour abounds throughout these entertainment centres, with an occasional non-sticky patch on the carpet that won't soil my Berlutti shoes. Foetid punters that want to be your new best friend because you actually have money to play with (although even these bottom-dwellers have abandoned most arcades now).

It's a far cry from ten or so years ago when you had to wait to get onto a machine. I noticed the nearest quicksilvers to me is doing a 10-for-1 promotion on the 500's. Get 10 verified 500 JP's and get £500 cash free. That speaks volumes about how awful these things are ! I doubt if Richard Branson waltzed in with a few pigskin suitcases stuffed with cash would the claim criteria be met.
"If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?"

there were three here until the quicksilver shut.

casino slots is at the skanky end of town ,there's never anyone in there when i go past it ,95% lowtech standard, there's only 3 high techs in there ,all 3 quite old and chipped

they have a sign in the window that says if you win two 500jpts in one day they'll give you 30 quid a day to play for the next 7 days....and another that says if you get one 500jpt they'll give you a free tenner to play for the next 7 days.

this exudes extreme desperation to get the money back methinks.

there's another called smokey joes ,this is down a side street and is members only with a security entrance ,it's split into two parts with lowtech and b3 in one half and lots of old high tech in the other half ,mainly crest and maygay.

i only went in there once and was lucky enough to get buzzed through the airlock by someone who said she was new there. she gave me a membership form to fill in and let me have a little go . i won about 50 quid very quickly and could hear a bit of tutting going on. i had that feeling you sometimes get that you were more than likely to rinse the place it would be a good idea to come back another time ,so i left ......and had to be buzzed out.

i went back afew days later ,they had no recollection of me being there and they could'nt find my membership card and said i could'nt fill in another one either and also that the manager would phone me.

that was 14 long months ago if he does'nt ring me soon he can forget the whole thing.

Just the nobles for me, staff friendly enough(polish aside) and it has a big deal, bank job, and road to riches video AWP thingy, along with a couple of multi game machines and a few £5jps. along with the usual £5 low techs and £500s

staff always happy for a bit of banter and giving you cash match free play etc tokens, along with the usual food and drink etc.

Quite a nice place to waste an hour if you're waiting for someone/already in town

There's 2 Reel Times where I live. Both agreeable places in terms of staff, machines vary in all of em. First one has a usual standard of lotechs and video screens, had a cops n Robber R2V and an electro, £5 crazy fruits and a couple other bits and pieces. Me and a mate once got a GATW on the cops n robbers and the worker there came across to see the winning and have a laugh

Other one has a better choice of machines, all the lotechs are at the front and the hitechs at the back. It's got a £5 snakez, R2R and Panther(which once I ripped off ten pence) and an elvis sitdown. Then theres a Codfather, CYBTB and a weird sitdown roulette sort of thing. There's other hitechs but I cant put my finger on the name right now.

Percentages are normally around the 84% mark. The first arcade is a bit bare but the 2nd one has a few people in it most of the time

That's a disgraceful offer, tells you all you need to know about how arcades view their responsibilities nowadays ...
This machine may at times offer a choice where the player has every chance of bankruptcy

If you want lights out, buttons not working and you don't want paying if the machine runs empty? Look no further than Holland Park Amusements, they also specialize in no drinks at all the whole year round, happy punting!
